Import Container Detention

mport Detention is charged after the expiry of the standard free-time period, which is:

For GENERAL containers (incl. HC's) : Ten (10) calendar free days from the first day of the container’s discharge from the vessel

For SPECIAL containers (incl. OT & FR) : Ten (10) calendar free days from the first day of the container’s discharge from the vessel

For REEFER containers (incl. Non-Operating Reefers) : Seven (7) calendar free days from the first day of the container’s discharge from the vessel

NB: CHARGES ARE PER CALENDAR DAY, INCLUDING WEEKENDS AND PUBLIC HOLIDAYS.

All container detention charges are subject to 10% GST.

Notes:

  • It is the responsibility of the consignee and or notify party to ensure the empty container is returned to the Cosco nominated depot on the delivery order. It is not the responsibility of COSCO SHIPPING to advise the consignee or notify party of any container that has not been returned. An invoice for the Container Detention Charges incurred will be raised after the return of the empty container(s).
  • If for any reason you wish to dispute the detention invoice, please do so in writing as soon as the invoice is received, otherwise we look forward to receiving payment within 7 days.
  • Any amounts that remain outstanding after 30 days will be placed in the hands of our collection agency or solicitor for further action. (An administration fee may be charged for these accounts).
  • NB: Freight brokers/Forwarders – Please collect container detention from your clients, as COSCO SHIPPING LINES (OCEANIA) will hold the consignee (As stated on the bill of lading) liable for all charges.
  • It is important to note that COSCO require their containers to be returned within the specified free time period. COSCO containers should not be used for storage purposes.
  • The free time commences from the day of the container’s discharge from the vessel.
  • For shipments where the Consignee is not a registered Company, a bond fee of $500.00 is payable prior to issuance of the Delivery Order.

The bond fee will be refunded in full upon the return of the empty container in good clean condition and within the specified free time period. However, if the container is returned outside of the free term conditions the appropriate detention charges will be deducted from the bond.

If the detention charges incurred are more than $500.00 COSCO SHIPPING LINES (OCEANIA) will seek to recover the additional costs from the consignee.

AFTER THE EXPIRY OF FREE TIME, DETENTION INCURRED WILL BE DUE AND PAYABLE, IN FULL, AT THE RATES AS LISTED IN THE ABOVE TABLE

Export Container Detention

Export Detention is charged after the expiry of the standard free-time period, which is:

For GENERAL containers (incl. HC's) : Fifteen (15) calendar free days from the first day the empty container is released to the shipper or nominated carrier.

For SPECIAL containers (incl. OT & FR) : Ten (10) calendar free days from the first day the empty container is released to the shipper or nominated carrier.

For REEFER containers (incl. Non-Operating Reefers) : Ten (10) calendar free days from the first day the empty container is released to the shipper or nominated carrier.

NB: Calendar days include Weekends and/or Public Holidays

Container Detention Legal Rulings

Port of loading export container detention charges incurred, are payable prior to the release of the Bill(s) of Lading or Sea Waybill.
COSCO SHIPPING reserve the right to withhold releasing Bill(s) of Lading or release
of cargo at destination, until export container detention charges are paid.
